Reduced glutathione, which is also commonly referred to as GSH, is a molecule that naturally occurs in all human cells. It is tripeptide - a protein that is made up of three amino acids. The particular amino acids that make up reduced glutathione are L-glutamine, L-cysteine and glycine. Inside cells, glutathione can exist in two states - either a reduced state or an oxidized state. When it is reduced glutathione is a powerful antioxidant, able to quench free radicals throughout the cell. Once it has quenched a free radical GSH becomes oxidized and is rapidly recycled by the cell to produce more of the extremely vital reduced form. At any given time the large majority of glutathione in a cell exists in the reduced form.

This small molecule plays an enormous role in the normal functioning and protection of cells throughout the body. Its antioxidant properties are of particular importance. Inside cells GSH acts directly to eliminate free radicals throughout the cell and even on DNA itself. It also helps to recycle other key antioxidants like vitamin E and vitamin C.

GSH Deficiencies:
Many different conditions can impact the levels of GSH available in the cell; in fact, depleted GSH levels are a good indicator that something is wrong, and is a symptom of a number of diseases. Depeleted GSH levels have also been associated with the aging process.

Immune System Support
The cells of the immune system rely on sufficient levels of GSH to function properly. In people with impaired immune systems, levels of GSH in the cells decrease dramatically. For example, individuals with HIV/AIDS have very low GSH levels, which has been shown to negatively contribute to disease progression. In vitro studies have shown that low GSH levels both promote the progression of HIV as well as impair the function of critical immune system cells called T-cells. Research has also shown that HIV patients with the lowest GSH levels have a dramatically lower survival rate after 2-3 years than those with higher GSH levels. These results indicate that restoring cellular GSH levels can benefit individuals with HIV.

Cardiovascular Health
GSH levels are also significantly lowered in patients with myocardial infarction and in men with a family history of heart disease. GSH has been shown to improve recovery after cardiopulmonary bypass surgery - improving both kidney and circulatory function after the surgery. In addition to this, glutathione may improve circulation by causing vasodilation, likely through its ability to increase nitric oxide levels. In one study, glutathione was shown to improve vasodilation of small blood vessels in individuals with atherosclerosis.

Detoxification
In addition to its role as a direct antioxidant, GSH is also an essential cofactor for a large number of enzymatic reactions in the body, and is especially important for the detoxification process in the liver. GSH is involved in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 detoxification reactions, and is therefore critical to the body's ability to break down and eliminate potentially harmful toxins.

Bioavailability of Reduced Glutathione
While GSH is a key molecule in the body, there has been quite a lot of debate regarding the ability of the body to absorb and use orally consumed GSH. Research suggests that GSH is effectively absorbed by the body from the gastrointestinal tract via a specialized uptake mechanism. However, it has also been shown that once absorbed GSH in the bloodstream is broken down by the body before it reaches the liver. Oral GSH may still be beneficial for conditions of the intestinal tract, like Crohn's disease, and possibly at a high dose for GSH depleted individuals. Oral supplementation with orthomolecular precursors of glutathione, like NAC, is likely a better choice for effectively raising cellular GSH levels.
